Okay, you now have a written and reasonable business plan, and your ready to move on with your Automated Video Store Venture, whats next? Well you next step is a biggie, and no it is not yet time to pick out your video vending machine. The Next step is location – yes that is a biggie, and let me make this point clear: LOCATION – LOCATION – LOCATION !!! Any successfully business entrepreneur know that Location is key to any business succeeding. Years ago McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc asked a group of students what they thought his key to success was many answered the Big Mac, fast service, low prices, or even great quality food. Ray Kroc informed the students that they key to his success was real estate / location. You see if you have the best location ( visibility, ease of access, high traffic volume ) then your business will succeed. Even in the past week I watched Donald Trump on “Celerity Apprentice”, and no one can argue that Donald Trump knows business! He reminded the players that it was the location they selected for there first challenge that inevitably help lead to there success. (of course it did not hurt that Gene Simmon’s is a business (out of the box) mastermind and helped lead the mens team to victory – but that is another story)

These same issues apply to opening and running your Automated Video Store. You need a great location. Okay now you say “What is the best Location” and I have to truefully tell you it all depends on the area or community you place the video dispenser in. Sure follow the basics:

1) Visibility
2) High Volume Traffic
3) Ease of Access
——-Then you need to take factors like these into consideration ——–
A) Proximity to local competition
b) Frequency of traffic (Example ONLY: Grocery Shoppers visit a store weekly not daily on an average)
c) Income of local users / residents. (Example ONLY: Your in a High Income Housing Area – Why do they want to rent when they can buy a DVD for less than $20.00, if they can afford a $100 can of cavier they are not likely to worry about saving money and renting a DVD)

Now there are many other factors that can be used – again it all depends on the area or community you are looking to place your automated dvd kiosk or larger automated dvd store / dispenser. I have seen time and time again clients pick a location based on personal feeling(s), how inexpensive the rent or % pay out will be, or even how easy you can get to the location.
If you can not get a steady volume of people to rent from your machine, you are doomed from the start. You will need to have a location that not only has a steady supply of traffic, but the hours have to be conductive as well. Example one of my wifes machine was in a Gas Station / Convenience store , in a small rural area, the next local video store was down the street about a 1/2 mile. When she first opened her automated dvd kiosk, the store she was in was open from 5:30am to 9:30pm, Seven days a week. The competition was open 5:30am to 11pm, also Seven days a week. Now her pricing was a $1.99 per night or a Unlimited Monthly DVD Membership for $20 per month ( 2 dvd out at a time – think NetFlix but easier and faster, with many customers renting 40+ DVD in a month ), the competitions pricing was $3.99 per night rental – no other options. She immediately made a killing, business was great! Then the store decided that they did not want to be open so late and wanted to close on Sundays – DOOM set in! With closing at 7:30pm and no Sundays business dropped at at 25% rate each month, till the point it was costing money to run a business with little to no profit being made.

Now, that Automated DVD kiosk of hers, is in the local Grinder / Pizza Shop, again open seven days a week and open from 9am to 1o pm – 11pm on Friday and Saturday) What do you think happened – yes business / rentals and customers returned. What was all that long story trying to show you an example of … Ease of Access.

With the correct location you can do very well, I am not saying you will make profit in your 1st year, thats why most business analyst suggest a 3 year business plan.

Okay you have found a prime location, high visibility, great traffic, perfect easy of access / hours of business. You have spoken to the owner and agreed to a reasonable rent (maybe 10% or 15% of your monthly intake or a set Dollar rate of $100 per month or 10% per month or what ever is greater – these are examples), what do you do now????
Well look for my next article - “Picking the Right DVD Vending Dispenser” — If you need help with picking a location or more long winded stroy’s of what we have seen work or fail, then just Contact Us. We are always happy to assist any person with a reasonable question.
As my Pepe (grandfather) always used to say “Its not the walk in with the big purchase, that will remember and refer you. Its the man who’s question you answered and showed the courtesy of your time and knowledge that will comeback and bring his friends.”

We have been contacted by several eBay buyers about used Riello 750 DVD vending machines for sale on ebay.com. First we are NOT the seller(s) – (yes we know they are using our graphics / pictures of machines). While we have sold Refurbished and New machines via eBay, we do not sell USED Machines. Second – these TW-750 Video Vending Machines from Riello may work fine – we do not know. But the main thing to remember that the sellers are neglecting to post is that the credit card processing software does cost a renewal / change of license fee to that company, that fee is approximately $599.99 (at last check). Also the software on these machines may be out of date! and unfortunately you can not buy a copy of the new software for you to install. The software, and installation needs to be done by a certified technician. If you would like a quote or estimate on the upgrades, installation and or training - please feel free to contact us, and we would be happy to assist.

If you are the seller of a used Riello Dispenser, please feel free to contact us, so we can give your buyers and you, all the information everyone will need on these video vending kiosks.

I would like to personally wish everyone a Happy, Safe and Prosperous New Years in 2008.
Now down to some business, I have had several emails over the past month with questions from people looking to get into the Automated Video Store or Video Vending Business. The main questions on every bodies mind is, where do I begin, followed by what dispense or machine is best. Well let me take the most important question first!

Q: Where do I begin to get into this business?

A: As with every any any business a “Business Plan” is a must, now I am not talking about a business plan in your head, I am speaking of a “Written Business Plan”, one that you can read over regularly. “How do i do this”, you ask, well the website and people from Score.org are a great place to start. Here is a except from them on a 60 second Guide to writing a Business Plan:

60-Second Guide to Writing a Business Plan
No two business plans look alike—nor should they. While many
small businesses launch without a plan in sight, if you are bent on seeking
funding, whether from a bank, angel or venture capitalist, you’ll need a
business plan. This task can be agonizing to some entrepreneurs—who fancy
discussions about the big picture—and liberating for others—who spend too many
wakeful nights counting sheep. To grow and survive, strategic thinking is
essential.

In just 60-seconds, we’ll show you how to plan for your
business’s future without overplanning yourself out of existence.

0:60 Think Before You Act
In the reactionary, frenetic pace of entrepreneurs, doing is usually much more
important than thinking. Taking weeks or months researching and reflecting on
your business idea will help you face some tough questions—ones often overlooked
amid all that doing. This means gathering data, evaluating your concept,
assessing the market for your product or service and studying the competition.
If you’re thinking about outsourcing these tasks, stop right there. It’s best to
do it yourself.

0:43 Get Help from Others
Involve your management team (if you’re an existing business owner),
professional consultants, other small business owners and anyone you trust
enough to take a look at your plan. And, don’t forget to Ask SCORE for help.
Some of the best and most unexpected ideas come from discussing your plans with
others.

0:38 Get Personal
There is no one template to follow when creating your business plan. While many
entrepreneurs start with a software package or template to cover the basics, be
sure the plan works for you and meets your needs. But there are a few rules you
should follow—be clear, concise and brief. Your plan should not be more than 20
pages.

0:23 Present Facts & Evidence
It’s crucial that your financial projections and sales estimates are based on
thoughtful research and evidence. A potential funder will see right though it if
you are padding the numbers. So make sure you can back up your assertions. Avoid
using jargon and don’t make unverifiable statements—they will be challenged.
Disclose any bad news yourself, rather than risk an investor finding out on
their own.

0:11 Make the Plan an Oral Presentation
Be sure to structure your business plan to make it easy to present the
information to potential investors or lenders. It may be helpful to consult with
your intended audience as the planning process moves along. Listen carefully to
their advice, so that when the time comes you’ll make an informed presentation.

Brought to you by SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business.” See more 60-Second Guides.

Okay now that your on the road to a written business plan, please let’s keep some things in mind. Be realistic with realistic goals! Yes this is a automated vending business, but that does not mean it does not require time or work. Do not envision yourself on the beach, in 6 moths, watching the money roll in on your laptop, just because you own a automated video store — Folks if you believe that then there is a guy in Brooklyn ready to sell you a bridge. You business plan and goal should be realistic – can I make that any clearer. You will need to order, program and stock your machine WEEKLY, yes weekly, just like every other successful video store you will need the newest weekly DVD’s in your machine “every” Tuesday. No matter is you only carry the most popular titles or movies that produced over 25 million in the box office, or what ever strategy you use, be faithful to your customers, and your business plan!Well that is enough for today, since it is New Years Day 2008 – I am off to spend time with my family! I will post again in a day or so with a article entitled “Automated Vending – Your Next Step”

Thanks to a computerized system, items can be rented and returned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in a totally simple and self-sufficient way. This cuts the cost of wages and provides a constantly high-quality service and an increase in both customers and profitability.

All the dispensers in the Twin range consist of:

• one store, containing the rack for housing the products. This is extremely flexible as it allows all the boxes to be used without distinction for VHS, DVD, CD, videogames or any other item with the same dimensions. Thanks to the Twin system a VHS box can be occupied by 2 DVD/CDs.

• one console, which is the front shown to the Customers and which interacts with them by displaying instructions on the monitor screen. All the operations to be performed are selected by simply touching the touch screen glass with your finger;

All the stores can be combined with different types of consoles which, in turn, can be chosen from different graphic options.
