Okay, you now have a written and reasonable business plan, and your ready to move on with your Automated Video Store Venture, whats next? Well you next step is a biggie, and no it is not yet time to pick out your video vending machine. The Next step is location – yes that is a biggie, and let me make this point clear: LOCATION – LOCATION – LOCATION !!! Any successfully business entrepreneur know that Location is key to any business succeeding. Years ago McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc asked a group of students what they thought his key to success was many answered the Big Mac, fast service, low prices, or even great quality food. Ray Kroc informed the students that they key to his success was real estate / location. You see if you have the best location ( visibility, ease of access, high traffic volume ) then your business will succeed. Even in the past week I watched Donald Trump on “Celerity Apprentice”, and no one can argue that Donald Trump knows business! He reminded the players that it was the location they selected for there first challenge that inevitably help lead to there success. (of course it did not hurt that Gene Simmon’s is a business (out of the box) mastermind and helped lead the mens team to victory – but that is another story)

These same issues apply to opening and running your Automated Video Store. You need a great location. Okay now you say “What is the best Location” and I have to truefully tell you it all depends on the area or community you place the video dispenser in. Sure follow the basics:

1) Visibility
2) High Volume Traffic
3) Ease of Access
——-Then you need to take factors like these into consideration ——–
A) Proximity to local competition
b) Frequency of traffic (Example ONLY: Grocery Shoppers visit a store weekly not daily on an average)
c) Income of local users / residents. (Example ONLY: Your in a High Income Housing Area – Why do they want to rent when they can buy a DVD for less than $20.00, if they can afford a $100 can of cavier they are not likely to worry about saving money and renting a DVD)

Now there are many other factors that can be used – again it all depends on the area or community you are looking to place your automated dvd kiosk or larger automated dvd store / dispenser. I have seen time and time again clients pick a location based on personal feeling(s), how inexpensive the rent or % pay out will be, or even how easy you can get to the location.
If you can not get a steady volume of people to rent from your machine, you are doomed from the start. You will need to have a location that not only has a steady supply of traffic, but the hours have to be conductive as well. Example one of my wifes machine was in a Gas Station / Convenience store , in a small rural area, the next local video store was down the street about a 1/2 mile. When she first opened her automated dvd kiosk, the store she was in was open from 5:30am to 9:30pm, Seven days a week. The competition was open 5:30am to 11pm, also Seven days a week. Now her pricing was a $1.99 per night or a Unlimited Monthly DVD Membership for $20 per month ( 2 dvd out at a time – think NetFlix but easier and faster, with many customers renting 40+ DVD in a month ), the competitions pricing was $3.99 per night rental – no other options. She immediately made a killing, business was great! Then the store decided that they did not want to be open so late and wanted to close on Sundays – DOOM set in! With closing at 7:30pm and no Sundays business dropped at at 25% rate each month, till the point it was costing money to run a business with little to no profit being made.

Now, that Automated DVD kiosk of hers, is in the local Grinder / Pizza Shop, again open seven days a week and open from 9am to 1o pm – 11pm on Friday and Saturday) What do you think happened – yes business / rentals and customers returned. What was all that long story trying to show you an example of … Ease of Access.

With the correct location you can do very well, I am not saying you will make profit in your 1st year, thats why most business analyst suggest a 3 year business plan.

Okay you have found a prime location, high visibility, great traffic, perfect easy of access / hours of business. You have spoken to the owner and agreed to a reasonable rent (maybe 10% or 15% of your monthly intake or a set Dollar rate of $100 per month or 10% per month or what ever is greater – these are examples), what do you do now????
Well look for my next article - “Picking the Right DVD Vending Dispenser” — If you need help with picking a location or more long winded stroy’s of what we have seen work or fail, then just Contact Us. We are always happy to assist any person with a reasonable question.
As my Pepe (grandfather) always used to say “Its not the walk in with the big purchase, that will remember and refer you. Its the man who’s question you answered and showed the courtesy of your time and knowledge that will comeback and bring his friends.”
